Agartala, 7th March 2024 :   Students at the Bishnupur Anganwadi Kendra under Bagbasa assembly constituency are reportedly being deprived of supplementary nutritional food daily due to a dispute surrounding the appointment of two helpers.

The controversy began when Rahana Begum, a resident of Ward No. 2, was appointed as a helper at the Bishnupur Anganwadi Kendra in Ward No. 1 through the Kadamtala CDPO office. This appointment was in addition to Piara Begum Lashkar, who had been serving as a helper since March 08, 2019, following the death of her mother-in-law, Khatija Khatun Chakuri.

Chakuri had been employed at the center as a result of a land donation by her brother-in-law, Cherag Ali (70). The situation escalated into a physical altercation between the two helpers on Monday, March 4, prompting an investigation by the Kadamtala police.

Husnara Begum, a worker at the Anganwadi Kendra, revealed that the ongoing dispute has resulted in students being deprived of supplementary nutritional food for several days. Despite informing Kadamtala CDPO Biswajit Das and Supervisor Rudrendu Bhattacharya about the issue, no action has been taken so far.

Residents allege that the department violated government rules by appointing Rahana Begum from another ward. According to these rules, a helper should be appointed from the same ward unless no one from that ward applies for the job. However, several women, including Piara Begum Lashkar, from Ward No. 1 had applied for the post.

The landlord, who had donated the land for the center, stated that his nephew’s bride, a resident of Ward No. 1, had been appointed as a helper as per the decision of the panchayat. He expressed confusion over the decision to bring in a woman from another ward without a proper trial.

The Bishnupur Anganwadi Kendra has been operating without helpers for a long time, and residents are calling for the attention of the state’s concerned department minister, Tinku Roy, to resolve the issue.
