Agartala, 7th March 2024 : The disabled people of North Tripura district have a reason to celebrate as the District Disability Rehabilitation Center (DDRC) was permanently inaugurated in Dharmanagar on Thursday. The center will provide them with certificates, aids and appliances, and other services without having to travel to Unakoti district, where the offices of various departments remained even after the bifurcation of North district in 2011.
The DDRC center in Dharmanagar was one of the 35 centers across the country that were inaugurated by Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar through a virtual conference. The inauguration ceremony was attended by local MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, Uttar Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Bhabatosh Das, District Magistrate Debapriya Bardhan, Dharmanagar Municipal Council Chairman Pradyot De Sarkar, Vice Chairman Manju Nath, CRC Dr. Amit Kashyap, DDRC in charge Dr Deepak Halder and North District Chief Health Officer in-charge Dr. Soumya Kanti Sinha.
The center was the result of the sole efforts of MLA Biswabandhu Sen, who had earlier arranged for a temporary DDRC center at Kalibari Dighi in Dharmanagar three months ago to alleviate the suffering of the Divyangjan people. However, the temporary center was still under the supervision of the Unakoti district administration. The permanent center will now function independently and cater to the needs of the disabled people of the North Tripura district.
The guests at the inauguration ceremony praised the state and central governments for bringing government facilities as close as possible to the homes of the common people and called it a sign of development. They also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making it possible and urged the disabled people to take advantage of the government schemes and facilities without being deprived of them.
Pratima Bhowmik, the Minister of State for the concerned ministry, thanked everyone for inaugurating the center through a virtual conference and said that out of the 35 DDRC centers that were inaugurated across the country today, four centers were in Tripura.
MLA Bishwabandhu Sen also announced that the next project in Dharmanagar is a cancer hospital, which has been approved by State Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha. He said that a cancer hospital will be constructed on 15 acres of land at Algapur in Dharmanagar as a branch of Silchar Cancer Hospital and the patients will have to pay only one rupee a year. He also said that if the current District Magistrate’s office is shifted to the new building, the old building will be converted into a Cancer Detection Centre. He thanked the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister on behalf of the people of Dharmanagar for fulfilling their dreams one after another.
