Court clears decks for ‘City Center’ project at Ambassa after 3-year legal battle

Date:

Agartala, 5th May 2026:   Ending a prolonged legal impasse, a district court has cleared the way for the construction of a long-awaited modern ‘City Center’ in Ambassa, the headquarters of Dhalai district. The verdict is being seen as a major boost to urban development in the town.

On April 9, 2026, the Civil Judge (Senior Division) at the Dhalai District Court ruled in favor of the Ambassa Municipal Council, affirming that the land identified for the project is Khas (government-owned) land. The court also directed the eviction of six traders who had been operating businesses at the site and had challenged the project, leading to a three-year delay.

The dispute dates back to 2023 when the Ambassa Municipal Council proposed the construction of a City Center in the Ambassa market area to generate employment opportunities for local youth. Although the State Government approved the proposal, work could not proceed after the traders moved court opposing their eviction.

Following extensive hearings, the court held that the government has full right to utilize Khas land for public welfare and development purposes. With the ruling now in place, authorities have announced that construction work will begin shortly.

Speaking at a press conference, Vice-Chairman Gopal Sutradhar said the council had assured the affected traders of rehabilitation. “They will be temporarily relocated during construction, and once the City Center is completed, permanent stalls will be allotted to them at the same site,” he stated.

Chairperson Pratima Malakar, along with councillors Uttam Adhikari and Shankar Chakraborty, was also present at the briefing.

Officials said the upcoming City Center is expected to transform the urban landscape of Ambassa, improve market infrastructure, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for hundreds of unemployed youths.

With the court verdict bringing closure to the dispute, residents of Ambassa are now hopeful that the long-delayed project will usher in a new phase of development and modernization in the town.
