Agartala, 23rd August 2026 : Tripura State Secretariat of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has accused the BJP-led state government of reducing the quantity of rice distributed through ration shops and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision.
In a statement issued on Saturday, CPI(M) State Secretariat member Haripada Das alleged that the government had capped ration rice allocation at five kg per person for a maximum of four members in a family. As a result, families with more than four members would receive no more than 20 kg of rice, irrespective of their actual household size, he said.
The CPI(M) termed the move anti-people, arguing that ration rice is essential for many families struggling with rising living costs. The party said the decision would further increase the burden on economically vulnerable sections and called for its immediate withdrawal.
The CPI(M) also expressed concern over the sharp rise in prices of essential commodities. According to the party, rice prices have increased by around Rs 1,000–Rs 1,500 per quintal over the past three months, while masoor dal and sugar have also recorded increases of more than Rs 1,000 per quintal.
Mustard oil prices, the party claimed, have risen by Rs 25–Rs 30 per litre, while prices of spices have also continued to increase.
The CPI(M) criticised both the Central and state governments for allegedly failing to take effective measures to contain inflation. It called for organised public pressure and united protests to compel the authorities to address the situation.
The party demanded that the government immediately restore the earlier ration rice allocation and take concrete measures to control the prices of essential commodities.
