CPI(M) meets Guv, Seek HC Judge-Supervised Probe into DGP’s Death, Expresses Dissatisfaction with SIT

Date:

Agartala, 27th July 2026 :   The opposition CPI(M) in Tripura has expressed dissatisfaction with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government to investigate the death of former Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar. The party on Monday met Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and demanded an impartial probe supervised by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, accompanied by eight CPI(M) MLAs, met the Governor and raised concerns over the ongoing investigation. He said questions have been raised by the people of Tripura, the family members of the deceased DGP, and several officials regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.

Chaudhury alleged that the government’s decision to assign the investigation to West District SP Namit Pathak has created doubts about the fairness of the probe. He questioned whether an officer of the rank of SP could independently investigate a case involving the state’s top police officer, particularly when questions and concerns have emerged from various quarters.

“The death of the DGP has taken place under mysterious circumstances, and there are many unanswered questions. The investigation must be conducted in a manner that ensures public confidence,” Chaudhury said.

He demanded that the SIT function under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge to ensure a free, fair, and transparent investigation. According to him, the party is not satisfied with the present arrangement and believes that judicial oversight is necessary.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar also met the Governor and submitted a memorandum highlighting the party’s concerns. Describing Dhankar as an honest, courageous, and dedicated officer, Sarkar said the circumstances surrounding his death were difficult to accept.

Sarkar alleged that the government’s decision to form an SIT instead of involving a High Court-monitored investigation had raised suspicion among people. He urged the Governor to take steps to ensure the involvement of the judiciary in the investigation so that the truth could come out and public confidence could be maintained.
