Agartala, 25th April 2025:  As part of a state-wide program, the CPIM party organized a protest today at Kathalia and Nalchar blocks under the Sonamura subdivision. The protest aimed to address pressing demands related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

In Kathalia block, the absence of the Block Development Officer (BDO) forced CPIM representatives to submit their demand certificate to the Panchayat Extension Officer. “We urge immediate implementation of our demands,” a representative stated. “If no action is taken within a week, we will be compelled to escalate our movement.”

The demands include the payment of outstanding REGA wages, the introduction of 200 days of REGA work annually, and an increase in the REGA wage to 600 taka. These issues were central to the protests in both blocks.

In Nalchar block, the program was led by former MLA Tapan Das. Protesters gathered in front of the CPIM branch office at Nalchar Bazar before proceeding to the block office to present their demands. “The rationality of these demands cannot be ignored,” said a protest leader.

Similarly, around a hundred workers, supporters, and leaders raised slogans along the Sonamura-Belonia road near Kathalia block. CPIM Sonamura Sub-division Secretary Board member Abdul Karim documented the details of the protest. Protesters including Mizan Mia, Paltan Dey and Bill Ashadri emphasized the urgency of addressing the demand charter.

The CPIM has made it clear that they expect swift action to resolve these issues, failing which alternative measures will be taken.
