Agartala, 25th April 2025: Thieves broke into two educational institutions in the heart of Sonamura town on the same night raising concerns over security and prompting calls for night guards at schools.
The targeted schools are Sonamura XII Girls’ School and Nabadwip Chandra Institution, both located near Sonamura Police Station were found ransacked early in the morning when teachers arrived. Locks of doors and storage units were visibly broken, leading to immediate reports to the school management committee and the police.
“We found that a total of 15 lockers were broken in the primary and upper primary sections. They took a laptop, a tablet, and approximately Rs 75,000 in cash meant for school admissions,” said a teacher from Sonamura XII Girls’ School.
News soon emerged of a second theft at Nabadwip Chandra Institution, where thieves reportedly broke into the food pantry lockers. It is suspected that the stolen items include both cash and mid-day meal supplies, though authorities stated that an exact tally of stolen goods is still under review.
Despite the schools being close to a police station, the thieves managed to dismantle about twenty locks, leading to frustration and speculation over the audacity of the crime.
“This is alarming. How could such a large-scale theft happen right near the police station?” questioned Shubhrajit Das, a social worker in Sonamura. Along with Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Sarada Chakraborty, Education Standing Committee Chairman Rakesh Ghosh, and city commissioner, Das visited the affected schools and assured that they would discuss the issue with police officials.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and vowed to take necessary measures. Authorities are now emphasizing the need for heightened security at schools, with discussions underway on appointing night guards to prevent future incidents.
