Agartala, 25th April 2025: The Unmesh Home operated by the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura has come under scrutiny for alleged negligence and irresponsible activities. Located near Gokulnagar City I Camp under Bishalgarh sub-division, the home is meant to provide refuge for orphaned children. However, recent events have raised serious concerns about its management.
A minor boy, aged approximately 10-12 years, from Munda Basti area of Kayerdhepa was handed over to Ajit Biswas’ family in Ward No. 3 of Nehar Chandranagar Gram Panchayat by his mother for proper upbringing. Ajit Biswas’ family reportedly cared for the boy as one of their own. Four months back, Child Line workers from Sepahijala district intervened rescuing the boy and placing him in the Unmesh Home.
Since his stay at the home, troubling issues have emerged. The boy was not enrolled in school, and he developed small black spots on his body that caused itching at night. Despite these health concerns, the home authorities allegedly failed to provide medical treatment. This morning, the boy along with another tribal minor escaped from the home and returned to Ajit Biswas’ house. The family was shocked to see the boys and immediately informed the home authorities. However, the authorities reportedly delayed their response.
When questioned, the boys described the alleged neglect and mismanagement at the Unmesh Home. A member of Ajit Biswas’ family, along with local residents and journalists, brought these issues to light. “If a home meant to protect orphaned children fails to provide basic care and education, it risks losing the trust of the very children it aims to shelter,” said a local resident.
The incident has sparked outrage with calls for action from the state’s Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Social Welfare and Social Education department. “Will the authorities take necessary steps to address these concerns? That remains the question,” remarked another local.
As of the time of reporting, the Unmesh Home authorities had not yet arrived to retrieve the two boys who escaped.
