CPIM Urges Election Commission to Ensure Safe Campaigning Following Tipra Motha attack

Date:

Agartala, 4th April 2026 :   The CPI(M), Tripura’s main opposition party, on Saturday called on the Tripura State Election Commission to take immediate measures to guarantee a safe and peaceful environment for election campaigning and voting across the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The demand came after an alleged attack by Tipra Motha supporters on a CPI(M) campaign earlier in the day. According to the party, around 11 am, CPI(M) State Secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, along with candidates Radhacharan Debbarma and Surya Debbarma from Jirania and Pulinpur-Mandai constituencies, were confronted by a group of Tipra Motha activists at Lalit Bazar under Mandwi police station in West Tripura. The activists reportedly created a disturbance, damaging campaign materials and raising provocative slogans, while the police did not intervene.

“The campaign meeting had to be suspended to avoid escalation,” the CPI(M) statement said, noting widespread anger among locals over the incident. The party accused Tipra Motha of resorting to such actions due to political weakness and alleged corruption in the ADC over the past five years.

The CPI(M) strongly condemned the violence, criticized the police for inaction, and urged the State Election Commission to ensure safe campaigning and voting throughout the ADC region. The party also called on citizens committed to peace and democracy to speak out against such disruptions.
