Agartala, 23rd December 2025: The seasonal sale of khajurer lali (date palm molasses) has begun in Kathalia’s commercial hub. However, consumers are being advised to exercise caution while purchasing, as concerns over quality and adulteration have surfaced this year.
Vendors are demanding Rs 400 per kilogram, a steep price compared to previous seasons. Despite the premium cost, many buyers have complained that the molasses lacks the fragrance and richness traditionally associated with pure date palm extract.
Reports suggest that some sellers are mixing sugar or cane jaggery with the molasses to maximize profits. This practice, though not universal, has raised alarm among consumers. “At such high prices, vigilance is essential. Otherwise, the satisfaction of enjoying authentic molasses at home will be lost,” warned local residents.
In Kathalia’s Belatli Para under Monai Pathar ADC village, veteran tapper Sakhi Charan Tripura has harvested sap from 25 date palm trees this season and brought his produce to the market. He insists that his molasses is of good quality, telling reporters that age and experience guide his work.
Yet, beyond individual claims, the broader market remains mixed. While many tappers in southern Kathalia maintain traditional practices, a section has allegedly resorted to adulteration for higher margins.
Consumers recall that such malpractice was rare in previous years. But recently, dissatisfaction has grown, with several buyers reporting that the molasses they purchased did not meet expectations.
As the season progresses, authorities and consumers alike stress the importance of caution. Without careful selection, households risk wasting money and losing the joy of savoring authentic khajurer lali.
