Agartala, 14th July 2026: Serious concerns have emerged over the state of public safety in Dharmanagar, a key town in North Tripura district, after reports revealed that nearly 94 CCTV cameras installed across the city are completely non-functional.
For the past one to two months, the surveillance system has remained inactive, leaving busy intersections, markets, government offices, hospitals, and other public areas without monitoring. During this period, incidents of theft and crime have reportedly increased, heightening fears among residents.
Local sources allege that despite repeated complaints to municipal authorities, no immediate steps have been taken to restore the system. Questions have also surfaced about attempts to shift responsibility onto a single employee tasked with monitoring the cameras.
Residents claim that thefts have affected government offices, hospitals, business establishments, and even jewellery shops, raising alarm over the deteriorating law-and-order situation. The absence of CCTV footage has further complicated police investigations.
The surveillance project, worth crores of rupees, was intended to strengthen urban security. However, with all cameras lying defunct, citizens are questioning accountability: if the system fails, who ensures their safety?
Attempts to seek clarification from the concerned authorities yielded no clear response. Meanwhile, public demand for the immediate restoration of the CCTV network is growing louder. For Dharmanagar’s residents, the pressing question remains — when will the cameras be brought back into operation?
