Dispute over pink toilets halts construction at Kailashahar

Agartala, 4th April 2025:   A conflict has erupted within the Kailashahar Municipal Council over the construction of pink toilets for women and children, leading to a halt in the project. Municipal Council Chairman Chapla Rani Debroy has accused Vice Chairman Nitish Dey of obstructing the initiative, which she claims is vital for the city’s development and dignity.

Speaking at a press conference, Chairman Debroy stated, “The Vice Chairman is not just blocking the construction of toilets; he is insulting the women of the entire city by doing so.” She was joined by Chief Executive Officer Pradip Sarkar, Deputy Executive Officer Biswajit Das, councillors Joydeep Das, Siddharth Roy, Manshi Roy, and Town Supervisor Manish Das.

Chairman Debroy highlighted her four-year tenure, during which various development projects, including roads, drains, public toilets, and water supply systems, were implemented. However, she pointed out the glaring absence of toilets for women in Kailashahar. “Despite all these achievements, the city still lacks basic facilities for women,” she remarked.

The controversy stems from a decision made on July 12, 2024, during a council meeting attended by both Chairman Debroy and Vice Chairman Dey. It was agreed in writing to construct toilets at various locations, including Kargil Corner. The project, funded entirely by the central government under the Prime Minister’s flagship scheme, involves six high-quality pink toilets, each costing approximately Rs 8.5 lakh.

However, the construction of a toilet near Kargil Corner was abruptly stopped by Vice Chairman Dey and Mandal President Pritam Ghosh. Chairman Debroy alleged, “The Vice Chairman himself proposed the Kargil Corner location during the meeting. Yet, he later halted the work without informing the council or administration, claiming it was illegal.”

To substantiate her claims, Chairman Debroy presented the council’s registrar book, which bore Vice Chairman Dey’s signature approving the project. She also accused Mandal President Ghosh of obstructing various council decisions and initiatives.

The dispute has drawn significant attention, with Chairman Debroy publicly calling out both Vice Chairman Dey and Mandal President Ghosh for their actions. “This is not just about toilets; it’s about the progress and dignity of our city,” she concluded.
