Agartala, 27th June 2025:  A man from East Champamura was arrested today after his first wife alleged that he abandoned her and their two children to marry another woman illegally. The arrest followed a confrontation at the husband’s residence, which led to police intervention.

The accused Sudip Dey, son of Dulu Rani Dey had reportedly married Uma Chowdhury, daughter of Krishnadhan Chowdhury from Kanchanmala No. 2 ward under the Golaghati assembly constituency around 10–11 years back in a love marriage. The couple initially lived together, but within months, Uma alleged that she was subjected to regular physical and mental abuse by Sudip.

Unable to bear the torture, Uma returned to her parental home. Despite multiple community-level settlement meetings involving local panchayat members from East Champamura and Kanchanmala, Sudip allegedly continued his abusive behavior. During this period, Uma gave birth to a daughter and while pregnant again, she permanently moved back to her father’s home. She later gave birth to a son.

According to the complaint, Sudip denied paternity of the son and made no effort to bring Uma and the children back. After years of separation, Uma and her family attempted to reconcile by visiting Sudip’s home this afternoon. However, they discovered that he had remarried another woman, allegedly without legally divorcing Uma.

The situation escalated when Uma confronted her husband, leading to verbal abuse and threats from both Sudip and his mother, Dulu Rani De. The family immediately informed Amtali Police Station, following which Sub-Inspector Sushmita Debnath, along with TSR personnel reached the location.

Upon questioning, Sudip’s second wife admitted that she was aware of his first marriage but proceeded nonetheless. Sudip De was arrested on the spot and taken to the police station.

Uma Chowdhury has since filed a formal written complaint at Amtali Police Station. Her father, Krishnadhan Chowdhury, while speaking to reporters, demanded justice for his daughter and called for strict legal action against Sudip.

Local residents and social activists have also urged the Tripura Commission for Women to intervene and ensure justice in the matter.
