Agartala, 5th August 2024:   In a significant blow to the Chief Minister’s campaign for a drug-free Tripura, police have recovered drug paraphernalia from the residence of a BJP candidate in the Rajnagar assembly constituency. This incident has raised serious questions about the commitment of some party members to the Chief Minister’s vision.

Late last night, acting on a tip-off, police raided the house of Sakhil Das, a minister of the Dakshin Radhanagar Gram Panchayat in the Tilla area of Rajnagar. The raid led to the recovery of 297 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup and 10 kilograms of dry marijuana. However, the owner of the house Sakhil Das managed to evade arrest by fleeing the scene before the police could arrest him.

Sakhil Das is the BJP’s nominated candidate for Ward No. 2 of Constituency No. 5 of the Dakshin Radhanagar Gram Panchayat. The finding of drug paraphernalia at his residence has not only shocked the local community but also sparked a wave of reactions among voters. Many are questioning the integrity of the party’s candidates and their commitment to the Chief Minister’s call for a drug-free Tripura.

Following the raid, the recovered drugs were taken to the PR Bari police station. A specific case has been registered under the NDPS Act against Sakhil Das, who is currently absconding. The case number is 038/2024. The operation was led by Belonia Sub-Divisional Police Officer with PR Bari Police Station OC Ratan Rabi Das, Inspector Sujeet Sarkar and DCM participating in the raid.

The Chief Minister had previously urged all citizens and party members to work towards a drug-free Tripura. However, incidents like these are undermining his efforts. “We are committed to eradicating drugs from our state, but it is disheartening to see members of our own party involved in such activities,” said a senior BJP official who wished to remain anonymous.

The local community is in turmoil with many expressing their disappointment and anger. “We trusted our leaders to lead by example, but this incident has shattered our faith,” said a resident of Rajnagar. The incident has also led to increased scrutiny of other party members, with calls for more stringent background checks and accountability measures.
