Agartala, 12th January 2026: An incident took place in Udaipur this afternoon when a man posing as a BSNL lineman was caught red-handed while attempting to steal telephone cables and equipment in the Ramesh Chowmuhani area.
The accused has been identified as Rakhal Das, a resident of the western bank of Amar Sagar Dighi.
Local sources informed that the man introduced himself as a BSNL employee and began cutting roadside telephone wires and other equipment. Initially, his actions appeared routine, but suspicion grew among nearby youths who noticed irregularities in his behavior.
When questioned, the accused failed to produce any official identification or authorization papers. Realizing he was an imposter, locals tried to stop him. As he attempted to flee, the youths apprehended him on the spot. Cut wires and tools were recovered from the scene.
Upon receiving information, officers from Radha Kishorepur Police Station rushed to the location. The accused was taken into custody, and the stolen materials were seized. Police sources revealed that during preliminary interrogation, Rakhal Das admitted to substance abuse, which allegedly drove him to commit the theft. Authorities are also investigating whether he has a prior record of similar crimes.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, who say cases of theft and fraud under false identities have been rising in recent months. Locals have demanded stricter surveillance and increased police patrolling to curb such activities.
