False allegations spark defamation case at Kamalasagar

Agartala, 17th November 2026:   A long-buried family feud has resurfaced in Kamalasagar after Shankar Chakraborty, who had been missing for nearly three decades, suddenly reappeared and leveled serious allegations against his younger brother’s wife, Rina Chakraborty. The accusations, widely dismissed as baseless, have prompted Rina to file a defamation case against her brother-in-law.

Shankar Chakraborty, the eldest son of Kshirod Bandhu Chakraborty of Gokulnagar, had vanished from the state in the early 1990s following multiple allegations of violence, arson, and terror in the area. Known for misusing political influence under the Congress banner, he fled after a change of government. His whereabouts remained unknown for decades, leading both family and locals to believe he was dead.

During this period, his mother passed away in 2006 and his father in 2009, yet Shankar never returned—even for the funeral rites. In 2014, a survival certificate was issued, and by 2021, the family amicably divided the ancestral property among the remaining siblings.

Shankar resurfaced unexpectedly in Kamalasagar and accused Rina Chakraborty, wife of his younger brother Sukumar, of fraudulently obtaining a death certificate in his name to usurp the family’s property. He claimed she used political influence to secure the certificate and seize his share of inheritance.

Rina, currently serving as the Kamalasagar Mandal Secretary of the ruling party, strongly refuted the charges. “If he can prove these allegations, I will leave politics altogether,” she declared, calling the claims “completely false and baseless.”

The allegations have angered both the local community and the Chakraborty family. Family members, including Shankar’s siblings, stated that if he is legally entitled to property, he will receive it. However, they condemned his decision to bypass family discussions and instead malign Rina under external influence.

In response, Rina has initiated legal proceedings against Shankar for defamation, asserting that her dignity and reputation have been unfairly attacked.
