Agartala, 9th June 2026: A family from East Churaibari village in North Tripura narrowly escaped a major tragedy on Tuesday morning when the guard wall of an 11 kV power tower collapsed onto their residence amid heavy rainfall.
The incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. in Ward No. 3 of East Churaibari village at the house of Anowara Begum. Fortunately, no family members were present at home when the accident took place. Anowara Begum had already left for work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) after completing her household chores, while other members of the family were also away.
Although the incident did not result in any loss of human life, it caused significant damage to the property. The collapsed wall completely destroyed the family’s kitchen and bathroom, while sections of the tin roof were badly damaged. Several domestic ducks and poultry birds were also killed in the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Anowara Begum alleged that soil erosion around the base of the power tower had been a longstanding issue, but the concerned authorities failed to address it adequately. She claimed that the tower had caused damage in the past as well and that despite several inspections, no permanent solution had been implemented.
“We repeatedly informed the authorities about the problem, but no timely action was taken. As a result, we have suffered heavy losses today,” she said.
The affected family has appealed to the local panchayat and administration for compensation and immediate assistance.
Meanwhile, local residents expressed concern over the safety of power infrastructure in the area, particularly during the monsoon season. They warned that inadequate maintenance of power towers and related structures could lead to more serious accidents in the future.
Residents have urged the authorities to identify vulnerable infrastructure and undertake necessary repair and safety measures without delay to prevent similar incidents.
