Family ostracized over dispute on religious donation at Sonamura

Date:

Agartala, 15th May 2026:    A family in Khedabari Gram Panchayat under Sonamura police station has alleged social ostracism and legal harassment following a dispute over contributions to a local annual waz mahfil (religious gathering).

Reportedly, Jahangir Hossain, son of late Mannan Miah, faced conflict with members of the mahfil committee earlier this year. He claimed that due to financial constraints, he had offered Rs 500 instead of the demanded Rs 1,000 as donation, which was refused. The matter resurfaced later when his brother Sajid Miah visited the mosque, leading to an altercation and physical scuffle with committee members.

Jahangir subsequently lodged a complaint at Sonamura police station. However, he alleged that soon after police intervention, a group of local youths including Zakir, Monir Hossain, and Khalek Miah attacked his residence, vandalized his grocery shop, and injured family members, including his wife. Another complaint was filed, but Jahangir claimed no action was taken against the attackers.

Instead, he stated that a notice was served against his family based on a counter-complaint from the mosque committee. Shockingly, even his college-going daughter, who is specially abled, was named in the allegations.

Speaking to the media, Jahangir questioned why women of his household were dragged into a mosque-related dispute and criticized the silence of local authorities. He said that despite informing Panchayat Pradhan Jhumki Dey Majumder and Deputy Pradhan Zakir Hossain, no resolution was provided.

The family has now appealed to the Chief Minister for a fair investigation and justice. Jahangir and his relatives expressed fear and anxiety over their safety, claiming they remain under constant threat in their locality.
