Fish die-off in Khowai stream sparks local outcry

Date:

Agartala, 21st July 2026;   Khowai town has been gripped by concern following the sudden death of a large number of fish in a stream and adjoining waterbody. On Wednesday, dead fish were spotted floating at several points along the stream that originates from Jambura Haor and passes through Ganaki, Subhash Park, and District Hospital Chowmuhani before merging with the Khowai River.

Local residents allege that deteriorating water conditions may have caused the deaths, though the exact reason remains unclear. They are demanding immediate investigation by the administration and relevant departments, including scientific testing of water and fish samples to determine the cause.

Citizens have also urged stricter monitoring of fish quality in local markets. Environmental experts warn that pollution or harmful substances in waterbodies can severely impact aquatic life and the ecosystem, stressing the need for swift preventive measures.

Meanwhile, residents of Khowai continue to press for accountability, calling for a thorough probe, identification of the underlying cause, and effective steps to prevent recurrence. The community now awaits the administration’s response to the alarming incident.
