Agartala, 2nd January 2026: The brutal killing of Angel Chakma has sparked outrage across the country, with protests erupting in multiple states demanding the harshest punishment for the perpetrators. Former Rajya Sabha MP from Uttarakhand, Tarun Vijay, visited Tripura to stand in solidarity with the people and Angel’s family, calling for the culprits to be sentenced to death.
Addressing a press conference at the Tripura BJP headquarters on Friday, Tarun Vijay expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the people of Uttarakhand. He stated that both he and the Uttarakhand government want the killers of Angel Chakma to face the maximum penalty, including capital punishment.
According to Vijay, Uttarakhand Police have registered murder cases against all accused. So far, five individuals have been arrested, while one remains absconding. Police efforts are underway to apprehend the fugitive. Vijay also met Angel’s family in Tripura, offering condolences and paying tribute to her memory.
Meanwhile, the Manipuri Council Tripura, along with the Tripura Manipuri Student Youth Coordination Committee and the Tripura Manipuri Women Council, organized a protest in front of Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan. Demonstrators demanded strict punishment for those involved in the crime.
Praveen Singh, a leader of the organizing bodies, told the media that the culprits must face the “harshest possible punishment” to ensure justice for Angel.
The incident dates back to December 9, when Angel Chakma and her brother were attacked by miscreants in Dehradun while out shopping. They were subjected to mob assault and knife attacks. Angel succumbed to her injuries on December 26. She had gone to Dehradun to pursue her studies but tragically lost her life to violence.
The murder has ignited widespread anger, with citizens across India demanding accountability and justice.
