From Classroom to Orchard: Teacher Thrives in Lemon Business

Date:

Agartala, 22nd April 2026: In the village of Champamura under Sepahijala district, a young teacher has set an inspiring example by achieving remarkable success in lemon cultivation. Prashanta Banik, balancing his profession as a teacher, has transformed his agricultural venture into a profitable enterprise, motivating many in the area to follow his path.

About three and a half years ago, Prashanta developed a lemon orchard on his land. Today, the garden is filled with clusters of vibrant green lemons hanging from the trees, reflecting the success of his efforts. His achievements have drawn attention from local farmers, many of whom are now showing interest in lemon farming.

One of the key advantages he enjoys is the ease of marketing. Wholesale buyers purchase lemons directly from his orchard, eliminating the hassle of selling in markets. He sells each lemon at a price ranging between ₹5 and ₹8, earning a good profit and expressing satisfaction with the returns.

Prashanta believes lemon farming is highly profitable with relatively low investment. According to him, fruiting begins within a year of planting, and with proper care, the trees can produce continuously for 10 to 15 years. Given the year-round demand for lemons and their high vitamin C content, which helps boost immunity, the market demand remains strong.

He initially invested around ₹20,000, covering the cost of saplings, land preparation, fertilizers, and other inputs. Within a year, the plants began yielding fruit, turning his vision into reality. Each tree now produces approximately 200 to 250 lemons.

Last year, he earned nearly ₹40,000 from his orchard and expects even higher returns this year. His success has not only increased his income but also created employment opportunities, offering a model for self-reliance among unemployed youth.

Prashanta also acknowledged the support of the agriculture department, which provided financial assistance, training, and continuous guidance. Agricultural officers have been actively encouraging farmers to adopt natural and sustainable methods for cultivating fruits, vegetables, and other crops.

His journey stands as a powerful example of how dedication and innovation in agriculture can lead to both economic success and community inspiration.
