Agartala, 24th July 2024: Amra Bangali Party was denied permission to hold a meeting in Agartala to protest the recent violent incident in Gandacherra sub-division. Condemning the administration’s decision, party secretary Gouranga Rudra Pal addressed a press conference on Tuesday at the party’s state office in Shivnagar here.
“On July 7, during the ‘Ananda Mela festival in Gandacherra, a tragic accident claimed the life of one individual. In the aftermath, on July 12, miscreants deliberately destroyed homes, vandalized shops, looted, and set fire to properties worth billions of rupees. Disturbingly, local legislators, district governors, and senior police officials were present but did nothing to stop these violent acts. They were mere spectators,” Pal explained.
Pal highlighted the ongoing fear among locals, noting that no arrests had been made and no cases filed by the administration. “The criminals involved have not been apprehended, and the administration’s inaction suggests they may continue their horrific attacks. The locals are living in constant fear,” he added.
He also criticized the administration’s biased response to the incident. “While incidental aid was announced for the tribal youth who died in the accident, only meager government grants of Rs 1 crore 54 lakh was allocated for 164 Bengali-speaking families. This is insignificant compared to the damage they suffered,” Pal said.
Reliable sources indicate that the condition of Bengali families in refugee camps in Gandacherra is dire. “They are living like inmates in a prison camp. No one from opposing political camps is allowed to meet or talk to the refugees, including journalists,” Pal revealed.
The Amra Bangali Party sought permission to hold a public meeting in Agartala on July 25 to highlight these inhumane issues. However, the police administration canceled the permission, citing concerns about law and order. “This is an interference with our democratic rights,” Pal stated. “We strongly oppose this anti-democratic attitude of the state government.”
The party is demanding the formation of a judicial inquiry commission to arrest the criminals and provide exemplary punishment. “We also call for the establishment of TSR camps in remote areas of the ADC, including the Gandacherra sub-division, to ensure the safety and security of the locals,” Pal concluded.
