Agartala, 6th October 2026 : Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital has successfully completed its 10th and 11th kidney transplant procedures, further strengthening the state’s capacity to provide advanced transplant services locally.

Following nine consecutive successful kidney transplants, the 10th procedure was performed on October 5 and the 11th on October 6 at the hospital’s Urology Department. The surgeries were conducted by a joint team of transplant specialists from AGMC and GBP Hospital and Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur.

On October 5, a kidney was transplanted into a 60-year-old woman from Naluwa in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision. Her 38-year-old nephew from Jogendranagar, Agartala, donated the kidney. Both donor and recipient are reported to be healthy and stable under medical supervision.

The 11th transplant was performed on October 6 on a 42-year-old man from Manubazar in South Tripura. His 38-year-old wife donated the kidney. Both the recipient and donor are also stable following the surgery.

The transplant team included nephrologists Dr Manas Gope, Dr Samaresh Pal, Dr Reshmi Das and Dr Udayan Saha; urologists Dr Mukut Debnath, Dr Bijit Lodh and Dr Jiban Debnath; and anaesthesiologists Dr Bhaskar Majumder and Dr Tapan Debbarma. From Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon Dr Paonam Samarendra Singh, Dr Maharabam Mahale and Consultant Anaesthesiologist Dr Thaunaojam Dinesh Singh participated in the procedures.

Nursing officers, floor nurses and OT technicians from both institutions also played a key role. Senior Nursing Officers Tapati Chakraborty and Sanjeev Kumar Das supervised the transplant surgeries.

Both operations began at 9 am and concluded at 3 pm, taking around six hours each.

The hospital authorities said every transplant is undertaken only after mandatory investigations, including donor-recipient kidney matching, and approval by the competent committee in accordance with established guidelines.

Notably, all 11 kidney transplants performed so far at AGMC and GBP Hospital have been conducted free of cost. The Tripura government also bears the travel expenses of the specialist medical team from Shija Hospital, Manipur.
