Agartala, 28th June 2025 :   Amid the festive fervour of Rath Yatra, a series of thefts have cast a shadow over celebrations in Dharmanagar. A gold chain and several mobile phones were reported stolen during the chariot procession, prompting serious concerns over the effectiveness of the security arrangements.

Thousands had gathered to witness the Rath Yatra that began from Rajbari Mandap para and drew crowds across the town. In the midst of the jubilant atmosphere, tragic reports of theft began surfacing.

Among the victims was Rupanjana Bhattacharya, a resident of Pragati Road, Noapara. While attending the event with her sister and nephew, she noticed the gold chain worn by the child was missing. It is suspected to have been snatched amidst the dense crowd. The chain reportedly weighed nearly a bhari, with an estimated value running into lakhs of rupees.

In addition, reports of at least ten mobile phone thefts poured in from various localities. Residents expressed concern over the adequacy of security measures, especially given the anticipated footfall during the festival.

Local administration had deployed police personnel at major intersections, yet the spate of thefts has raised questions about preparedness and response mechanisms. Many attendees voiced disappointment, stating that preventive arrangements were insufficient despite the expected turnout.

Following the incident, Rupanjana Bhattacharya lodged a formal complaint with Dharmanagar police. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway.
