Agartala, 28th June 2025 : Residents of the remote 35-Mile locality, nestled within the Atharamura hills under Mungiakami RD Block, staged a road blockade on National Highway-44 on Saturday, protesting the ongoing drinking water crisis that has plagued the area for over a month.
The protest triggered by administrative inaction brought traffic to a halt on the crucial Assam-Agartala highway. Villagers frustrated by weeks of water scarcity demanded immediate and lasting solutions from authorities.
According to the demonstrators, the crisis began nearly six weeks ago when a landslide dislodged a stone that ruptured the main water supply pipeline running alongside the highway. Since then, despite multiple appeals to the concerned departments, the pipeline remains unrepaired.
Women and children have borne the brunt of the shortage, often trekking long distances through difficult terrain to collect water from forest springs.
“This is not just about a pipeline—it’s about our right to survive,” said one local protester, echoing the community’s growing despair.
Police personnel from Mungiakami Police Station arrived promptly, and the blockade was lifted following an assurance from administrative officials that repair work would be undertaken without delay.
