Health department scandal: Doctor accused of gang rape, illicit property acquisitions

Agartala, 13th February 2025:    A disconcerting case has emerged involving Dr. Dayashish Chakma, a distinguished doctor within the state Health department currently serving as the District TB Officer in Dhalai district. Dr. Chakma is entangled in a gang rape case registered at Vangmun police station under case number 05/2024 citing Sections 120(B), 493, 417, 376(C), 503 and 38 BNS. Despite the case being filed on September 19, 2024, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Vangmun police station has yet to take legal action against Dr. Chakma. Allegations have surfaced suggesting an attempt to cover up the case in exchange for Rs 30 lakh.

This incident has been extensively reported in the leading dailies of the state. Observers have noted that if such an incident had taken place in a different state, there would likely have been immediate public outcry, with candlelight processions and protest rallies organized by activists.

Additionally, troubling financial discrepancies have been reported regarding Dr. Chakma. Allegedly, Dr. Chakma has acquired properties worth over Rs 200 crore in West Tripura district, registered in his and his wife Suparna Chakma’s names. A response from the Health Department, obtained through the RTI Act, shockingly revealed no information about these assets, suggesting a reluctance to address the issue of Dr. Chakma’s purportedly illegal wealth. Land records indicate that two properties in Kunjaban alone, with a combined area of 8.40 acres are valued at over Rs 100 crore. Despite evidence presented to the Health Minister and Health Secretary, no action has been taken and the Health department continues to provide incomplete, false, and misleading information under the RTI Act.

Furthermore, allegations of threats from Dr. Chakma against those attempting to expose these irregularities have surfaced, compounding the severity of the situation. Critics argue that the Health department is exhibiting behavior reminiscent of the information suppression seen in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

One concerned citizen remarked, “It is disheartening to see such blatant disregard for transparency and accountability in our state. This situation demands immediate attention and remedial action from the authorities.”
