Agartala, 18th May 2026: Continuous heavy rainfall in the hill and rural regions has led to a sharp rise in the water level of the Haora River. In the capital’s Baldakhal area, river water has reportedly crossed the danger mark, raising serious concerns among local residents.
However, residents allege that the administration has not yet responded to the situation, despite worsening conditions.
A woman from Pal Para in the Baldakhal area said that due to incessant rainfall since Sunday night, the river level has been rising steadily. By Monday morning, water had already started entering homes, and the situation has been deteriorating since then.
She further added that by afternoon, no officials had visited or contacted the affected families. Locals fear that if they are not relocated to safer places immediately, they could face severe hardship. Many families have already begun packing essential belongings in anticipation of evacuation.
Residents also pointed out that in previous years, water used to stop short of reaching the local public school, but now even the school premises get submerged during the monsoon season. As a result, they are often forced to shift to distant safe locations every year.
The biggest concern, according to locals, is the difficulty faced by elderly people and children during such evacuations, along with disruptions to daily work and livelihoods.
Residents are urging the administration to take urgent steps to move people from the riverbank areas to relief shelters before the situation worsens further.
