Agartala, 9th May 2025: A housewife from Khowai district attempted to take her own life today by jumping from the second floor of GB Hospital, allegedly after enduring prolonged physical and mental abuse at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
The victim, identified as Champa Rishi Das, had been undergoing treatment at GB Hospital after she was referred from Khowai District Hospital. According to sources, she had fallen ill earlier in the day, but her husband, Arup Moni Das, allegedly went to work without taking her to a doctor. Eventually, other family members admitted her to the hospital.
While under medical care at GB Hospital, she reportedly got into a heated argument with her husband. In a moment of distress, she allegedly jumped out of a second-story window in an apparent suicide attempt. Hospital staff and doctors immediately rushed to her aid and resumed treatment.
Family members from her paternal home in Agartala’s Bhati Abhaynagar area claimed that Champa was married four years ago and has since been suffering abuse from her husband and mother-in-law. They alleged that despite multiple appeals to administrative authorities and the State Women’s Commission, the situation had not improved.
Following the incident, police arrived at GB Hospital and have begun an investigation based on the complaint filed by Rishi’s family.
