Agartala, 13th December 2025: An incident of illegal child marriage has come to light near Raghunathpur Railway Station in Bishalgarh subdivision. This morning, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Bishalgarh received a confidential tip-off regarding the matter.
Acting on the information, officials from the District Child Protection Unit and Childline, accompanied by police from Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station, raided the residence of Monir Hossain on Saturday afternoon. During the operation, Hossain and the minor girl allegedly attempted to flee the house.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Monir Hossain’s father, Sohel Mia, admitted to Childline workers that his son had married the minor girl late last night. Authorities subsequently collected necessary documents from both parties and directed their guardians to appear before the Child Welfare Committee office on December 15 next.
Officials expressed concern over the rising number of child marriages in Sipahijala district. Despite awareness campaigns by government and non-governmental organizations, effective prevention remains elusive. Experts argue that counseling alone cannot curb the practice. They emphasize that strict enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 including filing cases and prosecuting offenders could instill fear of legal consequences and help reduce the prevalence of child marriage in the district.
