Agartala, 25th May 2025:  A three-month-old baby girl died under tragic circumstances at the R.G.M. Subdivision Hospital in Kailashahar, Unakoti district, sparking serious allegations of medical negligence. The grieving family has accused the hospital staff and multiple doctors of failing to provide timely and adequate treatment, leading to the infant’s untimely death.

The deceased, Divya Das, daughter of Ujjwal Das from Dev Para in Saidar Par village under Kumarghat subdivision, was brought to Kailashahar for treatment on May 23 after falling ill. The child was admitted to the RGM Subdivision Hospital that night under the supervision of a pediatrician.

According to the family, the child’s condition remained stable until Saturday afternoon. However, they alleged that her health began to deteriorate by Saturday night. Despite repeated appeals to the nurses on duty, a pediatrician was reportedly not summoned. The child’s condition worsened further by Sunday morning, after which a pediatrician was finally called in. She was treated for two hours but could not be saved.

In a sensational revelation, the family claimed that they had earlier consulted pediatrician Dr. Sanjana Ghosh on Friday at Kailashahar Swasthi Nursing Home, who had advised immediate admission to the private facility. However, citing financial constraints, the family could not afford the private care and rushed the child to the Unakoti District Hospital instead.

There, they allege, Dr. Ghosh—who was also present at the district hospital—refused to treat the child and instead advised a referral to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. With no option left, the desperate family approached the RGM Subdivision Hospital, where the baby was eventually admitted.

The family has raised serious questions over why Dr. Sanjana Ghosh refused to treat the child at the district hospital despite available infrastructure and chose not to admit her to the private nursing home due to the family’s financial situation.

When asked about the allegations, a pediatrician at RGM Hospital stated that the baby was born with a birth defect and suffered from malnutrition and low birth weight. The doctor added that the family had not consulted a pediatrician during the child’s first three months and blamed the situation on the family allegedly ignoring medical advice, including avoiding the feeding of external milk.

“This could have been avoided if the parents followed medical advice,” said the hospital doctor.

The incident has triggered outrage in the local area, with family members breaking down in tears and demanding justice. The tragic death has once again raised concerns about the accessibility, affordability, and accountability of pediatric care in government and private medical institutions.

An inquiry into the matter is being demanded by the public, as the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death continue to raise troubling questions.
