Agartala, 21st July 2026; The Ambassa Motor Stand turned into a flashpoint of unrest on Wednesday as simmering discontent and leadership disputes erupted into open confrontation. Normal operations at the stand came to a halt following clashes between factions of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and the Bus–Jeep Drivers’ Union.
Aggrieved drivers accused the newly formed committee, backed by BMS, of issuing threats and subjecting members of the old committee to harassment. Allegations included arbitrary suspension of vehicles, sidelining local drivers in favor of outsiders, and ignoring state committee directives. “Deepak Goswami is running the stand as per his own will. The state committee has declared this new body illegal, yet he continues to defy notices,” charged General Secretary Santosh Dey, speaking on behalf of the protesting drivers.
The situation escalated as drivers staged a sit-in protest and padlocked the union office. A large police contingent, including TSR personnel, was deployed to prevent untoward incidents. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nirupam Dutta and Ambassa Police Station OC later arrived on the scene, holding prolonged discussions with both sides to defuse tensions.
District committee secretary Narayan Debnath dismissed the accusations, asserting that the current committee is fully authorized by the state leadership. “If protesters claim the committee is illegal, they should produce evidence. We have all valid documents in support,” he said.
The ongoing tussle has thrown the motor stand into disarray, leaving drivers struggling to earn their livelihood and passengers facing daily inconvenience. All eyes are now on administrative and state-level intervention to resolve the deadlock and restore normalcy.
