Agartala: July 26. In a harrowing incident on Wednesday, the people of Kumarghat found themselves facing a near-disaster as an electricity tower collapsed into the river Manu, setting several houses on fire.
The accident occurred in the eastern Ratchara area of Kumarghat around 12 noon, leading to injuries and extensive damage to property.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tower collapse was followed by chaos and screams as residents struggled to cope with the aftermath. Many children and youths were among those injured, and numerous appliances like TVs, fridges, and mobile phones were destroyed in the incident.
Residents Rashid Ali and Siddhatha Ali claimed that the houses caught fire immediately after the tower collapse, exacerbating the already dangerous situation. The local TSECL employees were informed promptly, but they reportedly arrived at the scene after an hour, leaving the affected residents feeling helpless.
The incident has raised questions about the negligence of authorities and the lack of action despite repeated complaints from locals. Residents had been demanding for five years that the corporation authorities relocate the tower to a safer location, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Instead, the tower was supported with a bamboo pole, adding to the concerns of the community.
After the recent Rath accident in the area, experts warn that this electricity tower collapse could have easily become another major catastrophe. The incident has sparked tension and anxiety among the locals, who are now seeking answers about who will take responsibility for the damages and injuries caused by this preventable disaster.
