Agartala, 11th July 2025: Even as Udaipur continues to make strides in infrastructure and development, the common people are facing a persistent crisis — the lack of proper healthcare services in the heart of the city. The Tripura Sundari Sub divisional Hospital, once a key health facility for the region, now struggles with the absence of specialist doctors, leaving patients with no option but to travel to the Tepania District Hospital, nearly five kilometers away.
According to sources, during the Left Front government’s tenure, the hospital Chowmuani at Udaipur, was a bustling center of healthcare. However, in a major administrative decision, the district hospital was shifted to Tepania. While a sub-division hospital was retained at the old site in Udaipur following public protests, essential specialist departments such as pediatrics, gynecology, and internal medicine were never restored.
Hope was rekindled when the government changed, and locals believed that the sub-division hospital would see much-needed upgrades. Several meetings were reportedly held with drug traders and concerned stakeholders, and preliminary work was initiated to enhance the hospital. However, despite the discussions and groundwork, no significant improvements have taken place.
Titu Sharma, secretary of the Udaipur Chemist and Druggist Association, highlighted the consequences. “Since the specialist departments are not open round the clock at the sub-division Hospital, no pharmacy agrees to keep their stores open at night,” he said.
As a result, by 8 PM, most medical shops around the hospital down their shutters, leaving patients with no access to medicines or emergency services.
What’s more concerning is that even for common illnesses such as fever, patients in Udaipur city must be taken to Tepania after 9 PM, due to the lack of medical personnel and open pharmacies in the city. Locals argue that if at least one specialist department—either for children, women, or general medicine—is made operational round the clock, the city’s health infrastructure could be revived.
The economic fallout has also been severe. Following the hospital’s relocation, hundreds of small family-run drug stores and allied businesses severely impacted. Many of them had hoped for a revival with the new government, but that optimism is fading fast.
Now, the people of Udaipur and surrounding areas are collectively urging the state Health Minister and the Chief Minister to intervene. They are demanding that at least one specialist wing be opened 24×7 at the Udaipur sub-division Hospital to restore confidence in the city’s healthcare system.
