Agartala, 5th July 2024:   Residents of Indira Nagar, Sonamura, took to the streets today in a bold move to secure their homes from potential disaster. The community, located along the Melaghar road, faced imminent danger due to the eroding river bank. Fearing that their houses could be swept away at any moment, the residents of Ward No. 8, Melaghar Pur Parishad, demanded immediate action.

“After repeated pleas to the authorities yielded no response, we had no choice but to block the road,” said a concerned resident.

The protest garnered attention from local officials, including the OC of Melaghar police station and executive officers of the council, aimed to draw urgent attention to the issue. Upon arriving at the scene, officials witnessed firsthand the alarming erosion threatening the community.

“We have seen the urgency of the situation and assure the residents that steps will be taken promptly,” said Tatsange, one of the executive officers.

Following assurances from the authorities, the residents agreed to lift the blockade, hopeful that measures to fortify the river bank would commence without delay.
