LoP Slams Govt Over Employees’ Demands, Jobs and Rising Costs

Date:

Agartala, 23rd August 2026 : Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led coalition government, alleging that it has weakened the democratic environment in the state and failed to address the concerns of employees, unemployed youths and ordinary citizens.

Chaudhury was speaking at a street-corner meeting in Agartala organised by a Left-affiliated employees’ organisation ahead of the Tripura Assembly session, which is scheduled to commence on August 27.

The protest focused on employees’ long-standing demands, including the release of pending allowances and payment of 19 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA), which the protesters claimed is due in accordance with the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission. They also called for the formation of an Eighth Pay Commission in the state on the lines of the Centre.

Accusing the government of making repeated promises during elections, Chaudhury said the BJP had assured large-scale employment opportunities before coming to power in 2018 but, according to him, many young people continue to struggle for jobs.

He alleged that after nearly eight years in office, the government had failed to meet several of its major commitments and had instead increased the financial burden on different sections of society.

The LoP also questioned the government’s handling of employment and development in rural and hilly areas, alleging that economic disparities had widened and that ordinary people were not receiving adequate benefits from government policies.

Chaudhury further criticised recent increases in electricity tariffs and other charges. He claimed that public protests over the hikes had forced the government to announce a 100 per cent subsidy, describing the move as an attempt to pacify public dissatisfaction.

He maintained that such measures could not replace dialogue and meaningful action on the grievances of employees and other sections of society.

“The democratic voice of employees and the people cannot be silenced through temporary measures. The government must address their genuine demands,” Chaudhury said.
