Agartala, July 08, 2023: Maharaja Bir Bikram University organized the ‘World Earth Day Celebration 2023’ in collaboration between the department of Mathematics and the department of Library and Information science with the support of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, on July 6 last.
A focal point of the event was a thought-provoking panel discussion centered around the theme “Issues and Challenges in Investing in Our Planet.”
The event commenced with an inspiring welcome speech delivered by the Assistant Professor, Debdatta Adak. The university’s registrar, Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty, followed suit with a compelling address that underscored the pivotal role of quality education in safeguarding the environment. He drew attention to the forthcoming “Earth Overshoot Day” in July, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable practices.
Prof. Sabyasachi Dasgupta from the Forestry and Biodiversity department discussed about the detrimental effects of environmental pollution, global warming, and climate change on ecosystems and stressed the need to invest in environmental protection and peace. Chief guest, former professor and a renowned educationist Purnendu Kanti Das, emphasized the youth’s holistic development and presented books to the university’s vice chancellor and Registrar.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Satyadeo Poddar emphasized the criticality of environmental conservation and sustainability in the progress of civilization. He lauded the university’s concerted efforts in this regard, acknowledging their dedication to the cause.
The celebration included a poster competition and a tree plantation ceremony. Students from various departments took part in these competitions among them, Reshmi Sarkar, Mukta Ganachoudhury, and Chandan Nath secured the top positions in the poster competition, and seven students received complimentary gifts. Additionally, a spirited rally was conducted to raise awareness about the environment.
Overall, the World Earth Day Celebration at Maharaja Bir Bikram University highlighted the importance of investing in the environment, promoting education, protecting ecosystems, and nurturing the youth for a brighter and more sustainable future.
