Major Breakthrough in Rahul Kishore Roy Death Case, Accused Arrested by Police

Date:

Agartala, 24th May 2026 : Dharmanagar Police have achieved a significant breakthrough in the high-profile death case of Ward No. 5 councillor and Yuva Morcha Mandal president Rahul Kishore Roy by arresting accused Kankan Chowdhury.

The mysterious death of Rahul Kishore Roy had created massive uproar across Dharmanagar and other parts of the state. Following the incident, Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee, filed an FIR at Dharmanagar Police Station alleging serious circumstances surrounding his death.

The case was registered as DMN P.S Case No. 27/26 dated May 5, 2026, under Sections 329(4), 117(2), 351(3), 108, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Taking the matter seriously, police launched an extensive investigation. Acting on secret information, a special team conducted a raid at the residence of Kankan Chowdhury in the Bhairab Sarani area and arrested him in connection with the case.

Dharmanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Meena Rani Debbarma confirmed the arrest and stated that the accused has been booked on charges related to abetment of suicide. She further informed that investigators are examining whether there was any larger conspiracy or additional involvement behind the tragic incident.

According to police sources, the accused will be produced before the court on Sunday, and police are likely to seek remand for detailed interrogation.

Rahul Kishore Roy, a councillor of Dharmanagar Municipal Council and a prominent youth political leader, was found hanging inside his residence earlier this month. The incident triggered widespread public reaction, with family members alleging that he had been facing prolonged mental pressure, political conflict within the party, and repeated threats to his life.

Demanding justice, Roy’s family submitted a written complaint seeking strict action against all individuals allegedly connected to the incident.

Earlier, on May 13, the North Tripura District and Sessions Court rejected anticipatory bail pleas filed by three accused persons, observing that the allegations in the case were extremely serious and required a thorough investigation.

Police officials stated that the investigation is continuing at full pace and that every possible angle related to the case is being closely examined.
