Agartala, 28th November 2024: The bustling area of Manughat in the Longtharai Valley subdivision is grappling with severe traffic congestion due to the absence of a dedicated motor stand. Drivers are forced to pick up and drop off passengers on the road, exacerbating the problem.
Manughat, located at the heart of the subdivision is perpetually crowded. It houses various government offices and is a key transit point due to its proximity to the railway station. Passengers from different areas of the subdivision converge at Manughat to board trains. The Assam-Agartala National Highway runs through Manughat, adding to the constant flow of traffic. Local small cars and long-distance vehicles alike park along the highway to load and unload passengers and goods, leading to frequent traffic jams.
During the Left Front government, a motor stand was constructed near Manu Block at a cost of several lakhs of rupees. However, the location is inconveniently far from Manughat, deterring passengers from using it. As a result, the motor stand remains largely unused, with passengers preferring to wait on the road near Manughat Bazar. “The motor stand built during the Left Front period is now abandoned. The area has become overgrown with jungle, and the stand itself is now grazing land,” said a local resident.
The abandoned motor stand has also become a hotspot for drug dealers in the evenings. Due to the lack of passengers, vehicle drivers have abandoned the motor stand and resort to picking up and dropping off passengers on the national highway, further worsening traffic congestion.
Local residents are calling for immediate action to address the issue. “The motor stand was built without proper planning. It is essential to have a functional motor stand in Manughat to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure the safety of passengers,” said another resident.
The situation in Manughat highlights the urgent need for infrastructure planning and development to accommodate the growing population and traffic in the area.
