Mass Movement needed to prevent child marriage: Minister Tinku Roy

Agartala, 11th March 2025 :   Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy has emphasized the need for a mass movement to prevent child marriage, asserting that a country’s progress depends on equal rights for men and women.

He made this statement at a one-day awareness workshop on the implementation of various departmental projects, held in Hall No. 1 of Pragya Bhavan today.

The workshop was attended by representatives from three-tier Panchayats of the West District, corporators of Agartala Municipal Corporation, councilors of Municipal Council, public representatives of the Nagar Panchayat, child welfare committees, Anganwadi workers, assistants, and members of the Juvenile Justice Board.

Inaugurating the workshop, Minister Roy stated that the Social Welfare and Social Education Department plays a vital role in serving individuals from birth to death through numerous welfare projects.

He underscored that the workshop would be instrumental in disseminating awareness about these initiatives.

The minister highlighted that child and women welfare remain key priorities for the state government.

“Steps have been taken to enhance facilities like education, nutritious food, clean drinking water, and toilets at Anganwadi centers. Monitoring committees have also been established to ensure the proper functioning of these centers”, he said.

Roy lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in working sincerely for the welfare of children and women.

He informed that the state has more than 70,000 differently-abled individuals, out of which over 40,000 have already received UD ID cards.

Under the Sponsorship and Foster Care Alliance Scheme, financial aid of Rs. 4,000 per month is provided to children for their education. Families of deceased individuals receive Rs. 2,000 under the Chief Minister Antyodaya Shraddhajanji Yojana. Additionally, 4.08 lakh beneficiaries are receiving social allowances under 34 different schemes annually.

The minister revealed that under the Juvenile Justice Fund, financial assistance of up to Rs. 3 lakh is available for medical treatment of children up to 18 years. He also announced that under the Chief Minister’s Balika Samriddhi Yojana, a bond of Rs. 50,000 will be kept in the name of each BPL girl child, which will mature into Rs. 8-10 lakh when she turns 18.
