Massive Fire Breaks Out at Teliamura Fruit Market; Questions Raised Over Disaster Response

BY TC News Desk

Agartala, 6th March 2026:  Panic gripped the Teliamura Fruit Market area late Thursday night after a devastating fire broke out, destroying several shops and causing heavy losses to local traders.

According to reports, the fire started around midnight and quickly spread to nearby shops within minutes. Due to the intensity of the flames, multiple shops were reduced to ashes, leaving several business owners severely affected. The incident created a tense and chaotic atmosphere in the entire market area.

Local traders and eyewitnesses alleged that although personnel from various administrative departments reached the spot after receiving information about the fire, members of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s disaster management team were not seen playing any effective role. According to the allegations, some officials were merely observing the situation instead of actively participating in firefighting or assisting the affected traders. Locals also claimed that some members were seen standing with their hands on their waists or busy taking photographs rather than helping with rescue efforts.

It may be recalled that a similar controversy had emerged in 2025 following a tragic road accident in the Chakmaghat area. In that incident, driver Mihir Lal Debnath reportedly remained trapped inside a vehicle for a long time and died while crying out in pain. At that time too, questions were raised over the inaction of the subdivision’s disaster response team, with locals expressing anger over the delay and lack of effective rescue efforts.

With fresh allegations surfacing after the Teliamura market fire, concerns have once again been raised about the effectiveness of the local disaster management system. The affected traders have demanded a proper assessment of the damage and immediate assistance and compensation from the administration.

Meanwhile, the fire was eventually brought under control with the efforts of the fire brigade.
