Agartala, 9th May 2025: The Bengali Department of Michael Madhusudan Dutta College (MMDC), Sabroom today organized a celebration in honor of Rabindranath Tagore’s 164th birth anniversary. The eminent poet was born on May 7th (25th Boishakh) at Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Kolkata. He was the youngest child of Devendranath Thakur and Sarda Devi. Rabindranath was a multifaceted genius,beyond being a renowned poet, he was a philosopher, writer, playwright, musician, painter and social reformer. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection of poems titled “Gitanjali,” making the nation proud.
The program commenced with homage to the poet’s portrait through garlanding, reception, and inaugural music. The event was presided over by Dr. Anupam Guha, Principal of MMDC. Distinguished guest Ratan Chokroborty, a retired head master of Sabroom Manu H.S. English Medium School and a renowned poet, shed light on Rabindranath’s life and urged students to embody his values and ideals.
Dr. Guha quoted Rabindranath’s words, “The education of humanity is the highest education and everything else is subordinate,” and emphasized that Rabindranath was ambitious, respectful of humanity and established Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan in 1901 with the aim of blending Indian culture with Western education harmoniously. He was a global poet. Dr. Guha highlighted the poet’s foresight and urged students to pursue not just academic success but true education. Other speakers included Dr. Kamal Acharya, a senior faculty member of the Bengali Department, Dr. Dipankar Deb, Secretary, Teachers Council, Jewel Karmakar, Student of third Semester and Sajal Nath, member of college alumni association.
The program featured performances of Rabindranath’s songs, poetry recitations, and dance by faculty members and students which were both enjoyable and captivating. Mrs. Supriya Mog, HoD of Bengali Department and Sujata Basak guest lecturer delivered welcome address and vote of thanks. The event concluded with the national anthem, bringing the celebration to a close.
