Minor bride rescued at Kailashahar, sparks concern over child marriage

Date:

Agartala, June 07: Despite ongoing awareness campaigns to curb child marriage, the practice continues to persist in the state. Today, officials from the Child Helpline and the District Child Protection Unit, acting on a confidential tip-off, rescued a minor bride from Chandipur Ward No. 5 in Kailashahar.

Sources informed that the minor girl hailing from Serampur was married to a youth from Chandipur Ward No. 5. Acting swiftly, personnel from the Child Helpline, District Child Protection Unit and Kailashahar Women’s Police Station raided the young man’s residence. The rescued girl and the young man were subsequently brought to the office of the Kailashahar District Child Welfare Society.

Family members revealed that the minor had moved to the youth Pranoy’s house on June 02 last due to a romantic relationship. Following discussions, both families agreed to formalize the marriage, which was conducted at a temple in Dolugaon yesterday. The incident has reignited concerns regarding the prevalence of child marriage despite legal prohibitions and awareness initiatives.

Authorities are expected to take further action in accordance with child protection laws.
