Agartala, 27th November 2024: A shocking incident of minor marriage has come to light in East Gokulnagar, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of child protection mechanisms and local law enforcement.
The incident involves a 14-year-old girl and a young man named Sayan Bhowmik, who reportedly fell in love over mobile phone interactions.
Yesterday they tied the knot despite the girl’s minor status. Both had been living under the care of their maternal uncle since childhood, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
Today around 3 pm, a team led by Bishalgarh Child Line and Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shiuli Das rescued the minor bride from her maternal uncle’s residence. The girl was subsequently sent to a shelter home for her safety.
However, the rescue operation has sparked criticism. Locals allege that Shiuli Das and her team, often accused of being unresponsive, acted only after receiving multiple reports about the illegal marriage. This reflects poorly on the Child Line authorities and the Bishalgarh Women’s Police Station, which are supposed to prevent such incidents proactively.
Adding to the controversy, Shikha Das, a local leader affiliated with the ruling party, is said to have been aware of the minor marriage but took no steps to stop it. This has drawn ire from residents, who accuse the administration of negligence and complacency in addressing child welfare issues.
“This incident is a slap on the face of the authorities who are supposed to protect minors. It exposes the inefficiency of the local police and Child Line. The marriage could have been prevented if they acted on time,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.
The police have assured an investigation into the matter and promised strict action against those responsible for facilitating the minor marriage.
