Agartala, September 22, 2023: Michael Madhusudan Datta College, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme of the College and Sabroom Nagar Panchayat, organized a cleanliness and tree plantation drive on Friday as part of the ‘Swachatai Seva’ campaign and to mark the 73rd birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The drive was aimed to create awareness among the students and the community about the importance of cleanliness and environmental protection.
The program started with a ceremonial watering of the trees and an opening song by the college choir in the college hall. The students welcomed the guests with small saplings as gifts and a slogan of ‘A tree is a life’. The chief guest of the program was Sabroom Nagar Panchayat Chairperson Rama Poddar (De), who urged the young generation to take up the responsibility of ‘Swachatai Seva’ and also highlighted the benefits of tree plantation for the environment.
The vice chairperson of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat Dipak Das praised the central government’s initiative of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which he said was a dream of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that people from all parts of the country have participated in this initiative and appreciated the college’s contribution. The principal of the college, Dr. Anupam Guha, presided over the event and said that the students are the backbone of the future and they have to play a special role in building a clean and healthy society. He also reminded them of the motto of the National Service Scheme, ‘not me but you’, and appealed to them to plant more trees to protect the environment.
A quiz competition on ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ was also conducted on the occasion and the winners were awarded. The program concluded with the national anthem. In the next phase, the students took part in the cleanliness and tree plantation drive in the college campus. They showed a lot of enthusiasm and spirit in this noble cause.
