Mother with infant attempts suicide by jumping into river; Public saves both at Bishalgarh

Agartala, 13th July 2025:   A deeply unsettling incident took place in Bishalgarh this afternoon as a mother attempted to end her life along with her four-month-old baby by jumping off a bridge into the Bijoy River allegedly driven by persistent domestic abuse.

Eyewitnesses say the woman, identified as Tanzina Akhtar from Ashabari village in Boxanagar leapt from the bridge near Bishalgarh Market holding her infant, reportedly failing to endure continuous physical and psychological torment by her husband Sabuj Mia. Local passersby acted swiftly to rescue the mother and child preventing a tragedy that could have cast a long shadow over the town.

The rescue sent shockwaves through the market area with panic spreading rapidly. As the husband arrived at the scene, an outraged crowd booked him and informed the local police. Bishalgarh Police Station staff arrived promptly and took Sabuj Mia into custody.

Residents expressed relief that the town was spared a grave misfortune, while also demanding justice for the victim.
