Agartala, February 16: In a surprising turn of events on Wednesday afternoon, railway worker Manoj Sharma stumbled upon a significant sum of money aboard the Kanchenjunga Express en route from Sealda to Agartala. The recovery, totaling Rs 66 lakh 57 thousand, has left authorities and passengers puzzled, with speculation rife regarding its origins and purpose.
The incident took place at 2:40 p.m. as the train, coincidentally on Saraswati Puja day, made a scheduled stop at Dharmanagar station. Sharma uncovered the stash near the bathroom of B1 compartment, prompting immediate investigation.
Despite efforts to locate the rightful owner, no claimant for the money came forward. Consequently, upon the directives of the sub-divisional registrar of Dharmanagar sub-division, the funds were subjected to machine counting and are slated to be handed over to the Government Railway Police Force (GRPF) following due legal procedures.
The counting process, scheduled for Friday, revealed the denominations to be primarily Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes, contributing to the total sum of Rs 66 lakh 57 thousand.
While the recovery has ignited curiosity and excitement among locals in Dharmanagar, questions linger regarding the delay in informing the media and the prolonged legal procedures undertaken by the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The absence of clarity surrounding the circumstances behind the abandoned funds adds to the intrigue, leaving the community abuzz with speculation.
As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant, aiming to unravel the mystery behind the sudden windfall aboard the Kanchenjunga Express.
