Agartala, 5th August 2025: Unakoti District Hospital, the primary referral medical center at Bhagabannagar has been functioning without a single obstetrician and gynecologist for the past three days leaving pregnant women in the district to suffer in silence.
According to hospital sources, both of the hospital’s only gynecologists Dr. Sumit Das and Dr. Sujit Das are on leave. Dr. Sumit Das had initially taken casual leave and was scheduled to rejoin on August 3. However, he extended his leave unexpectedly and informed Medical Superintendent Dr. Rohan Pal via email.
“Dr. Sumit Das mentioned in the email that he would submit the extended leave application after returning. But unfortunately, Dr. Sujit Das had already been granted leave from the same date, which has resulted in a complete absence of gynecological services here,” said Dr. Rohan Pal.
Despite being informed, the state health department has yet to take any corrective steps. From August 03 to today, no gynecologist has been available at the district hospital, which handles hundreds of maternal cases each month.
In desperation, many pregnant women are being sent to the RGM Subdivision Hospital. However, that facility is not equipped for cesarean deliveries. “We have only one gynecologist here, Dr. Chiranjib Deb and no operation theater. Patients are overflowing and some are lying on the floor,” said a staff nurse.
One attendant at the RGM hospital lamented, “We’ve been demanding an OT here for months. How long will the government ignore the basic needs of expecting mothers?”
With public hospitals falling short, those who can afford it are turning to private clinics, while the majorities are left helpless. Locals are now urging the state health department to immediately deploy a gynecologist at Unakoti District Hospital and operationalize the OT at RGM Hospital to avoid further tragedy.
