Agartala, 14th June 2025:  In response to Tripura’s high vulnerability to natural disasters, local authorities in Panisagar subdivision have taken a pioneering step toward community-based disaster preparedness. The North District administration under the leadership of DM Chandni Chandran and Panisagar SDM Sushanta Debbarma has completed an elaborate disaster management training program involving both men and women volunteers.

According to the Natural Disaster Management Authority, Tripura currently falls under the fifth critical zone for natural disasters. In anticipation of sudden calamities such as floods or fires, disaster response teams have been formed in every subdivision. These teams are being trained by the state-run Civil Defense Authority, with practical modules provided by the fire and emergency departments.

A key highlight of this initiative was a week-long mock drill and training exercise organized by the Panisagar Subdivision Administration in collaboration with the local fire department. A total of 11 women and 31 men were trained in three separate batches at the Panisagar Fire Service Station.

The first batch, comprising 11 women volunteers, underwent five days of intensive training followed by a final day of demonstration. They actively participated in fire suppression drills and simulated rescue operations, including evacuation and first aid for accident victims. The display of skill and courage impressed all observers.

“Women volunteers performed every task with equal efficiency and confidence. Their dedication and discipline were on par with our full-time firefighters, and we are proud of their achievement,” said Mridul Debnath, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Panisagar Fire Department.

The second and third phases of training involved 15 and 16 male volunteers, respectively, who were also taught advanced rescue techniques and firefighting. All training sessions concluded with practical demonstrations showcasing the volunteers’ readiness to assist in emergencies.

OC Mridul Deb Nath personally supervised the sessions and praised the joint efforts: “Our goal is not just training but building a culture of preparedness. These volunteers can now act swiftly during floods, fires, or other disasters, saving lives and minimizing losses.”

SDM Sushanta Debbarma expressed his appreciation, stating, “This program is a model for the state. The community’s participation, especially from women, highlights the success of inclusive disaster management.”

The initiative has received wide praise from residents and civic leaders, who are urging state authorities to replicate the Panisagar model across all districts of Tripura.
