Photojournalist attacked in capital city: Six arrested

Agartala, 25th November 2024:  In a shocking incident on Sunday night, photojournalist Sujit Acharya, who works for an electronic media outlet was brutally attacked by a group of youths in the capital city. The police have since arrested six individuals in connection with the assault. The accused are identified as Shubhrajit Debnath from Ramnagar Road No. 11, Ripon Das from Joynagar Dashami Ghat area, Ajay Deb from Khayerpur Chandpur area, Manti Malakar from Hapania area, Shanto Roy from Bhattapukur Durgapalli area, and Bapan Das from Bhattapukur Durgapalli Balichar area.

Sujit Acharya recounted the events to media personnel stating that he had gone to Malaynagar bypass area to broadcast the Anukul Thakur festival live. “It was around midnight when the live broadcast ended. After packing up, I waited for a car which took a long time to arrive,” Acharya said. When the car finally arrived, he asked the driver about the delay, which agitated the driver.

Despite the altercation, Acharya loaded his equipment and left for home. However, upon reaching the Siddhi Ashram area, the driver stopped and brought in 5 to 6 youths in an eeco car. The eeco car then hit the back of Acharya’s bike, causing him to fall. “I was then brutally beaten with iron rods by the driver and the youths,” Acharya stated.

Locals who witnessed the incident rushed to his aid and managed to hand the attackers over to the police. Acharya sustained severe injuries to his head and body and was promptly taken to the hospital.

In response to the attack, Acharya has filed a case at the police station. The police have arrested the six accused and initiated an investigation under specific sections of the law. The arrested individuals are currently held at Amtali police station.

On Monday afternoon, members of the Tripura Journalist’s Union and Tripura Photo Journalists Association led by senior journalists Pranab Sarkar and Sanit Debroy visited Amtali police station demanding strict punishment for the culprits. “We demand justice for Sujit Acharya and strict action against those responsible for this heinous attack,” a representative from the association stated.

Agartala Press Club in a press communiqué condemned the incident and demanded stringent action against the accused persons.
