Agartala, 31st July 2024: The Smart City of Agartala is grappling with a surge in thefts and drug-related crimes raising serious concerns about public safety. Residents are increasingly frustrated with what they perceive as police inaction allowing thieves and drug addicts to expand their operations unchecked.
Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer recently acknowledged the gravity of the situation stating, “Several incidents of bike and TomTom thefts have been reported in Agartala city over the past week. We have registered cases and are actively investigating.”
In response to the rising crime, the police formed a special committee to tackle the issue. On Wednesday morning, officers from the East Agartala police station arrested a notorious thief, Ranghush Deb. During interrogation, Dev revealed that he had hidden a TomTom and two bikes in a forested area in Bankumari Nath Para. Acting on this information, the police recovered a TomTom (TR01ER 3448) and two bikes (TR01E 5492 and TR01AU 7857).
Further questioning of Dev led to the identification of his accomplices: Sujeet Malakar, Changki Chowdhury, Amit Goswami, and Rupak Malakar. Their residences span across Joynagar, Jogendranagar, Town Pratapgarh, Kalitila, and Kalachand Para in the capital. A police team swiftly arrested the remaining suspects.
The investigation revealed that the gang had been stealing bikes and cars from areas such as Neem Bridge, Maharajganj Bazar, and CR Road. They would then dismantle the vehicles and sell the parts. “We have gathered substantial information from the arrested individuals and are continuing our efforts to apprehend the entire network,” a police spokesperson said.
Despite these arrests, the frequency of thefts in urban areas remains a pressing issue. Vehicles are being stolen in broad daylight, highlighting a significant lapse in police surveillance. “The incidence of theft is increasing by leaps and bounds due to the lack of strict police monitoring,” a local resident lamented.
The police have assured the public that they are intensifying their efforts to curb these crimes and restore a sense of security in Agartala. However, the community remains vigilant, urging the authorities to take more decisive action against the growing menace.
